Tasting Cape Town

Doing what we do best – patrolling the food industry, finding the finest tools in the world, eating, learning, laughing and enjoying every last bit of it – the Yuppiechef team headed off to the British Airways ‘Taste of Cape Town’ festival on Saturday.
In arguably the hottest and most humid weather of the year so far you would have been forgiven for thinking you were in Durban, were it not for the magnificent view of Table Mountain from the events location, just off Kloof Nek. It’s a pity we didn’t go at night because I would imagine with the mountain lit up, the balmy weather, some world class food and a tight and energetic atmosphere, this event had the mark of perfection.

Almost like a miniature version of the Met there were stalls, tents and marquees a plenty to duck your curious head into. With the food currency being crowns and come skill needed for what food would make a good bet, all we needed were some horses! The top 18 restaurants were showcasing their wares and these were the intended highlight of the four day event. Needing around 3 to 8 crowns (a crown was worth R5) you could sample what has made these top restaurants famous at a fraction of the cost.
I really enjoyed the unique combinations they had come up with and special mention must be made of La Colombe – their food was outstanding. If only I had a bigger stomach I would have tried everything on offer at the event. Other highlights were Pick n Pay’s various little stalls and some of the best olive oil I have ever tasted, straight from Greece – and at a remarkable price of just R75 a litre (efharisto Marie). I should have bought two! All in all, a wonderful day.
